Lake Oswego enforces Oregon's state eBike rules and points riders straight at the statutes. The city's police department has run eBike-focused patrols, so enforcement here is active even though the underlying rules are the state's: a minimum rider age of 16, and no eBikes on sidewalks, ever.
Key restrictions
Age 16 minimum:
no one under 16 may operate any class of eBike, under ORS 807.020. The Lake Oswego School District applies this directly — elementary and middle school students may not bring eBikes onto campus, because no student that age can legally ride one.
Sidewalk ban:
eBikes are never allowed on sidewalks, under ORS 814.410. The city states this plainly in its own rider guidance. If you must use one, dismount and walk the bike.
Where to ride
Riders must use a bike lane where one is adjacent to or near the roadway, under ORS 814.420. eBikes are allowed on bike paths and in crosswalks. Lake Oswego Code 32.10.810 sets out the city's general requirements for operating bicycles.
Penalties
Unsafe operation of a bicycle on a sidewalk is a Class D traffic violation under ORS 814.410. Confirm current local penalties with the City of Lake Oswego.
